Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)

What is a Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)?

A urinary catheter is a tube put into the bladder to help drain urine. Sometimes, these catheters can get infected, but we can often stop these infections with good care and by taking out the catheter when it's no longer needed.

How Can I Help Prevent This Infection for My Child?

  • Keep the catheter secure. Make sure the catheter is always fastened properly.

  • Don’t let the urine bag touch the floor. Always keep the urine collection bag off the ground.

  • Clean the area. Make sure to clean the area around the catheter at least once a day.

  • Avoid kinks. Keep the catheter and the tube straight and free from twists.

  • Check if the catheter is still needed. The medical team should review if the catheter is still necessary every day.
